Keynote speaker Louise Tagliante, Founder of Differentiate and its renowned mentoring programme Protégé, spoke on the topic of Women in Leadership and shared some insights on how to empower oneself.

The event also featured lots of opportunities to shop for a cause. Gorgeous sustainable fashion space The Fashion Pulpit offered lots of new and pre-loved clothes, while designer bags and gowns were up for auction, courtesy of luxury trading platform The Fifth Collection and their collectors.

Guests walked away delighted with their purchases and the opportunity to play a part in supporting women to achieve economic independence.

It’s not every day that you get to walk on car-free streets in car-heavy Singapore and participants enjoyed the chance to see Singapore from a refreshing new perspective. The leisurely morning walk took us through the Civic District, Central Business District and Telok Ayer conservation area, with Insta-worthy opportunities everywhere!

We wrapped up at the Esplanade Park with a rousing Dress for Success pop quiz and announced the winners of our Instagram contest.

Trivia Night 2018

Whooping for joy one minute and slapping our forehead the next! Trivia Night was great fun and a novel way to raise funds for Dress for Success Singapore.

Photos: Highboon Studios

Trivia Night, held on 26 January 2018 at Clifford Chance in Marina Bay Financial Centre, is the fifth in our series of networking and fundraising events which started in 2016.

The event saw teams pitting their wits against each other for top spot but after three rounds, it was still anyone’s game. The ingenious wipeout round soon put paid to that -- team Jamie and the Party Girls emerged winners to score dining vouchers sponsored by a Michelin star restaurant. In close second was Ninja Turtles, followed by Fashionistas.

More excitement was in store in our raffle and business card draws -- lucky winners walked away with staycations, F&B vouchers and scarves. Trivia Night was not just a really fun evening, it also gave us the opportunity to welcome new supporters to our community.

Trivia Night 2018 was organised by Image Mission in support of Dress for Success Singapore – empowering women to get jobs, advance in their careers and achieve economic independence.

Power Walk 2017

Power Walkers were out in full force for our 1st international Power Walk for Dress for Success!

Power Walk is the only international 5km walk dedicated to empowering women on their journey to economic empowerment. It was wonderful to host this meaningful event for the first time in Singapore on Sunday 29 October 2017 and join our sister Dress for Success affiliates around the world who have held the Walk this year.

Photos: Highboon Studios

Power Walk 2017 was a family-friendly event held in conjunction with Car Free Sunday SG, where participants could walk down the streets of the Central Business District and experience the city in a whole new way.

One of the highlights was walking along Esplanade Drive and posing for photos with the shiny skyscrapers of the business district in the background. The walk seemed to whiz by in no time at our brisk pace!

As we looped our way back to the Padang, we checked in at a café for some morning coffee and fun - an Instagram contest and Dress for Success quiz! It really was a lovely way to spend Sunday morning.

The ChariTea Fiesta networking event on 24 June 2017 at Raffles Town Club was the second organised by Image Mission this year to raise funds for Dress for Success Singapore. It was also an opportunity to welcome new supporters to our community of empowering women.

Our stall at the Club’s bazaar also saw brisk business, thanks to our wonderful volunteers Anubhav, Lingzhi, Meggan, Mingfang, and Yee Min. With their sales savvy, they quickly closed deals on new and preloved designer brand items, among other fabulous items.

The networking event held at Novotel Clarke Quay was the third organised by Image Mission to raise funds for Dress for Success Singapore.

Founder Li Kin, in her welcome speech, said: “The Dress for Success programme is for women who, in the eyes of potential employers and even their family and friends sometimes, have little hope of a future. We see beyond the façade of their T-shirts, jeans and gloomy outlook… 99% of the time, they walk out transformed inside out, confident that they can achieve economic independence.”

Since its start in September 2015, Dress for Success Singapore has served more than 180 women who have made the courageous choice to step out to work, overcome challenges in their lives and build a future for themselves and their families.

Dare2Dress

This courage was celebrated with the launch of the Dare2Dress 2017 fundraising challenge. A special video courtesy of Highboon Studios was unveiled and the Absolutely Fabulous duo showed how easy it is to register their dare in the live demonstration.

Guests gamely rose to the challenge by dressing as their fashion icons and strutting their stuff on stage. Michael Jackson, Iris Apfel and the Absolutely Fabulous duo were crowned Best Dressed Fashion Heroes. Guests also had fun in the Tag & Win social media contest.

The Dare2Dress challenge is on till end March and open to anyone who dares to dress as their fashion hero for a day. Show your support for disadvantaged women in Singapore and take the Dare2Dress Challenge today!

Sparkle & Shine

Everyone has the potential to shine and someone who knows all about how to shine is Robyn Dittrich. Despite facing challenges in her childhood and early career, she found ways to shine and “live an extraordinary life”. Our keynote speaker shared some of the lessons she learnt at Sparkle & Shine, our second networking fundraiser on 6 December 2016.

Ways to Shine

Robyn, who is the APAC Vice President of Sales at S&P Global Platts, highlighted the importance of having a good support network and confidence to succeed. She also inspired guests to give back: “If you are being the best version of yourself you can be, you need to touch as many lives as you can and do things that matter. The reason to shine is to be transformational, whether you touch one life or many.”

She added, “The Dress for Success programme has the potential to transform women's lives – supporting women and finding them meaningful work, so they can break the cycle of poverty, shame or illness. The success of these women has ripple effects on families and can have a positive impact on our whole society.”

Transformed!

One woman transformed that night was client Nana. The young mother of three glowed with confidence in her sparkly black dress (kindly donated) and makeover by volunteer Veronica. Nana, who runs a food business in a school canteen, shared that she is currently attending a mentoring programme by Dress for Success to guide her in achieving financial goals to build a future for her family. She said, “I believe the mentoring and interview programme at Dress for Success will benefit women who want to shine and be successful.”

Sparkle & Shine was indeed full of moments of inspiration. In addition, guests also had a great time hamming it up at the Adrenalin photo magnet booth and sampling fresh gourmet coffee from Cafe Cafe Global.

Cafe Cafe Corporate Challenge

Founder Li Kin also launched the Cafe Cafe Corporate Challenge that night – corporate partners were invited to support Dress for Success Singapore simply by providing less than 0.5 sq metres of space in their office for a Cafe Cafe speciality coffee machine. For every location, Cafe Cafe Global will donate $200 to Dress for Success Singapore. Learn more about the Cafe Cafe Corporate Challenge here.

Celebrating our Journey

What better way to celebrate than with friends? More than 100 friends and supporters joined us to celebrate our first year of operating Dress for Success Singapore at our Inaugural Networking Event on 6 September 2016. You made our day!

Photos: Brent Rutherford

We’ve made some great strides since opening Dress for Success Singapore in September 2015. Clients served, referral partners and active volunteers on board with us have all rise. But this event wasn’t just about celebrating our journey. It was also about celebrating our clients’ journeys.

As Founder Pang Li Kin said in her speech, “We want to celebrate each step of their journey. What inspires all of us who work with our clients is their smile when we put them in an outfit that makes them shine; the joy in their voice when they tell us ‘I got the job and you helped me!’ And we don’t give up when they say ‘I didn’t get the job, I want to get more coaching.”

Winnie Kong is one of our clients who shared her journey that night. We first met Winnie at a grooming and makeover workshop in July and were struck by how lively and inquisitive she was. Taking the stage with great confidence, our special guest said, “I would like to encourage others to use Dress for Success because they have helped me feel more confident in myself and they can help others feel more confident too. With the help I am getting, I am one step closer to my dream of getting a job.”

We applaud Winnie and all our clients for their courage in overcoming disadvantages in their lives; taking the first step towards getting a job, achieving economic independence and building a brighter future for themselves and their families. We are also grateful to our referral partners for their support which enables us to help their beneficiaries get the job they need to become economically independent.

An awesome night!

Our Inaugural Networking Event gave guests an opportunity to learn more about Dress for Success Singapore, network and win in the raffle draw -- the top prize was a weekend stay for 2 at Sofitel Bali! The Shoeshine Redemption also offered complimentary shoeshines to guests who donated women’s work shoes that night.

Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us -- volunteers, donors and supporters from AccorHotels, ANZA, Baker & McKenzie, Macquarie and UBS, just to name a few. Special thanks to our venue sponsor AccorHotels & Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay and raffle prize sponsors – Sofitel Bali, Sephora, Elverd Designs, Penfolds, Devotion Beautique, Expat Hair Studio and Luxenity.

Our next Networking Event is on 6 December 2016 -- look out for details soon!

Dressing for Success

Dressing well for an interview may not always be topmost on our minds, yet its importance is undeniable. It creates a good first impression and does wonders for your self-confidence, which is why Dress for Success Singapore is a girl’s best friend!

Photos: Noorindah Iskandar

We recently organised a Dress for Success workshop, interview styling and makeover event on 18 July 2016 for a referral partner. This was followed by a professional resume photo shoot the next day, sponsored by Light Stand of the Adrenalin Group. Judging from the smiles and laughter, the makeovers and photo shoot were clearly the highlight of the event! It was wonderful to see everyone looking so happy, relaxed and confident.

Marilyn Kang, an employment specialist, said, "The transformation in the ladies was phenomenal. We can really see them carry themselves more confidently after donning the new clothes and going through the makeover. They were very happy to receive the free clothes, shoes and accessories. It really made their day!”

For some of the participants, learning how to dress to suit their body type was empowering and left a deep impression. Esther Chong Fong Peng shared this:

“Being just 5 feet tall, I have never felt any wish to dress myself up as people around me would say ‘You should wear high heels; you wouldn't look good even if you did.’ I felt that wearing heels was tiresome and uncomfortable, and the comfortable ones weren't high enough. I usually went about my volunteer work here and everyday life in track pants and t-shirts.

However, the clothes from Dress for Success Singapore fitted me so well and the heels were really great! I felt a new sense of confidence in my appearance. At least now people were taking an interest in me just from first impressions. Everyone said I looked great and my father was really encouraging. It was then that I realized physical flaws should not affect me. With a bit of effort, I could look flawless and increase my self-esteem, which is crucial in presenting myself well at an interview. I will follow the tips learnt at the Dress for Success workshop and build up my work wardrobe. Thank you all for your help.”

To all the lovely ladies we met at the workshop -- we wish you all the best in your future careers and look forward to supporting you on your journey to economic independence!

Some of our awesome fundraisers: Fairy Godmothers & Cinderellas, The Rosies, Netsuite Singapore Superhero Friday, Winnie the Pooh & Friends Party, Flying Fans, Chantek.

We Dared to Dress!

The month of March saw some of us at Image Mission bedecked in silk, sequins and wigs, all in the name of fun(d)!

Dressed as Fairy Godmothers and Cinderellas, our volunteers were taking part in the
#Dare2Dress challenge. It was held for the first time this year and open to anyone who dared to dress as their favourite hero / heroine for a day.

Our volunteers showed how a little daring could go a long way towards raising awareness and funds to help disadvantaged women in Singapore overcome barriers to achieving economic independence through the Dress for Success® Singapore programme.

“#Dare2Dress is about stepping out of your comfort zone and demonstrating the courage it takes for these women to overcome disadvantages in their lives when stepping out into the working world,” explained Pang Li Kin, Image Mission founder.

The Image Mission team did their dare on 8 March 2016 and celebrated International Women’s Day by visiting two charities to bring cheer to beneficiaries and spread the message that they too can make their dreams come true by believing in themselves and never giving up.

Game for the challenge, our supporters and corporate partners also got bold and organised their own campaigns. Netsuite Singapore staff bravely showed up for work as Wonder Woman, Wolverine and other superheroes, while UBS and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer organised in-house events to raise funds for our cause. Elsewhere across the island, the Flying Fans performed a graceful tai-chi routine at the Botanic Gardens. Just to name a few. Together, we raised more than $10,000!

So, what shall we dress up as next year?

Our Official Opening

Volunteers, clients, referral and corporate partners joined us to celebrate our official opening on 11 November 2015. The intimate event, held at our boutique, allowed us to showcase how our signature programme, Dress for Success® Singapore can help women in Singapore gain economic independence.

It also gave us the opportunity to show our appreciation to stakeholders who supported us in the start-up phase of the charity. At our Open House later that day, clients from referral agencies enjoyed complimentary styling and makeover sessions.
